Volunteer
Jordan
Jordan is 21 years old and came to us on a placement from Glasgow Clyde College. The course is called Moving on to Work and helps students identify possible routes forward into the workplace. Jordan wasn’t sure what interested him but when the college offered him a place learning about gardening with us he decided that he would like to try this. Starting in September 2022 he worked at Polmadie Plots every week until the course finished in May. He has continued to volunteer with us all through the summer. He is also looking after his own raised bed with our Adopt a Plot scheme. Here is a short interview with Jordan: Selina: Is there anything that you have particularly enjoyed? Jordan: Learning how to handle tools and garden equipment. Planting seeds and waiting to see how they grow Selina: Did you know anything about gardening before coming here? Jordan: No, my college offered us a few different options and I liked the sound of learning about gardening Selina: I understand that you have decided to continue with gardening and have signed up to study horticulture? Jordan: Yes, I’m going to start a Nat 4 in Horticulture at Langside College this September Selina: What would you say are some of the things that you have got out of your involvement with Urban Roots? Here is a list of a few suggestions, please tell me the ones that apply to you Jordans answers were: Learning new skills - gardening, conservation and environment My confidence has gone up and I feel better about myself I feel physically fitter and healthier I’m thinking about looking for work doing something like this I understand more about global environmental issues like climate change Selina: Thinking about lifestyle changes that you have made since working with us, can you say which of these suggestions apply to you? Jordans answers were: Thinking more carefully about my own impact on the environment Caring about the environment and wildlife more Recycling more of my waste Composting Thinking about climate change and what we can do about it Selina: And finally, what are you growing in your raised bed? Jordan: Onions, garlic and beetroot Jordan has found a passion for gardening and we are delighted that he has chosen to go on and study horticulture. His careful work and close attention to detail is perfectly suited for working with plants. He has learnt new skills and a whole lot about plants as he worked here, alongside our community gardener Thanks Jordan for all your hard work and enthusiasm and we wish you well in your future studies.
